Stump Grinding & Removal
Heavy Otter provides expert stump grinding and stump removal services, utilizing commercial-grade equipment to ensure efficient and thorough stump elimination.
Stump grinding is the process of mechanically grinding a tree stump down below ground level, allowing the area to be backfilled, regraded, or replanted without removing the entire root system.
Most stumps are ground 6–12 inches below grade. Wood chips are left on site unless removal is requested, and access, stump size, and root flare all affect pricing.
When Stump Grinding Makes Sense
• Preparing an area for new landscaping or construction
• Removing trip hazards or surface roots
• Eliminating regrowth or pest issues
• Improving appearance and usable space
Access plays a major role in stump grinding. Gates, fences, slopes, and surface roots can affect equipment choice and approach. Unless otherwise requested, grindings are left on site and raked back into the hole.
When Stump Removal May Require Excavation
In some cases, removing a stump with an excavator may be the better option. This is typically recommended when a stump must be completely removed due to construction plans, foundation work, utility conflicts, or significant root mass that cannot be addressed through grinding alone.
Excavator removal is generally more expensive than stump grinding because it involves full root extraction, heavier equipment, additional labor, and soil disturbance that often requires backfilling and grading afterward. If excavation is required, this work is often completed as part of a larger site preparation or grading scope.
